Often, the new age way of thinking equates nationalism to philosophies, politics and principles one upholds on how a free and independent country must be run. And as no society will ever be homogenous with everyone owning the same beliefs, this mindset further highlights differences causing societal problems that should not have gone bigger and deeper, and could have been avoided.
As we commemorate our independence, it is necessary that we remember with all this freedom bestowed upon us, that our being Filipino comes next only to being children of God first. And with that, we have in each of us the intrinsic value and capacity to love and respect one another as fellow human beings, as fellow Filipinos.
If in reflection you still find countrymen who do not share the same perspectives, who do not uphold the same moral compass as you, remind yourself even more that in loving your country, and in promoting your principles, inclusivity to all Filipinos is encouraged, in thought, word and deed, so the value of what you believe in benefits all.
Perhaps, if a mindset like this is encouraged, we can deeply enrich the value of freedom and nationalism. By practicing love and respect to others regardless of points of view, then maybe we can find more opportunities to connect, understand, and enlighten each other, rather than disprove and put another down. And then maybe we can see more similarities that have always been there that will strengthen our history, unite our people, and bless our country with grace that only God can give to correct things that our human efforts have fallen short to achieve.
Original Text in Filipino
